Soapnut berries come from the Sapindus mukorossi tree, native to India and Nepal. The berries are picked and dried and then the shells (or husks) are removed and used for a property they contain called saponin. Saponin is a natural surfactant that can be used as a cleaning agent with amazing properties!

In 1578 soap nuts were recorded for their medicinal value and cleaning properties in the Compendium of Materia Medica written by Li Shi Zhen, the famous physician.
